JANEANE GAROFALO: FLAG-BURNING CHOKES ME WITH PRIDE!

by Marcus Rubyman, staff reporter [July 30, 2002]

[HollywoodInvestigator.com]  Funnygal Janeane Garofalo is "insulted" by Old Glory -- and "chokes with pride" when naked gays burn it! That was her shocking admission to L.A.'s hip & trendy Buzz magazine (which folded in 1998).

In a profile entitled "Don't Tread On Janeane," written by Trish Deitch Rohrer, Garofalo fumes:

"Our country is founded on a sham: our forefathers were slave-owning rich white guys who wanted it their way. So when I see the American flag, I go, 'Oh my God, you're insulting me.' That you can have a gay parade on Christopher Street in New York, with naked men and women on a float cheering, 'We're here, we're queer!' -- that's what makes my heart swell. Not the flag, but a gay naked man or woman burning the flag. I get choked up with pride."

While the tear sheet from Buzz (now in possession of the Hollywood Investigator) lists no date, it describes Garofalo as a "29-year-old", indicating the issue appeared in 1993 or 1994. (The Internet Movie Database claims Garofalo was born in 1964).

Has the hugely $ucce$$ful funnygal changed her tune since 9/11?

In a post-9/11 article for Commentary magazine (Nov 2001), Terry Teachout quotes Garofalo: "Who would have thought that I'd be angry on behalf of my country? I'm used to being angry at my country."
